On behalf of CMS, Wang Meng attended the East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress 2006, which convened from 12-16 December 2006 in Haikou City, Hannan Province, China. The event, hosted by the Chinese Government and organized by Regional Programme on Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA), a regional programme supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), provided a region-wide platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, capacity building, strategic action and cooperation for the sustainable management and development of the seas of East Asia. Over 700 participants attended the Congress.
The workshops on seven themes were held during the five days. Wang Meng mainly attended the workshops and seminars under Theme 4, which was Safer Shipping and Cleaner Oceans. Richard Johnson from ITOPF, Zafrul Alam from MPA, Singapore, Jianxin Zhu, Miguel Palomares from IMO, Mans Jacobsson, the former director of IOPC Funds, Robert Beckman from National University of Singapore,Yang Xinzhai from China MSA and etc. made speeches on the workshop.
On the closing ceremony, it is concluded that EAS Congress 2006 has set up a good model for working together; suggesting that further improvement would result from EAS Congress 2009.
